ACHIEVING SOCIAL CAPITALISM
- Social Capitalism entails a new way of looking at the world, and a better way for resolving economic, social, and environmental problems.
- Never have circumstances been more fortuitous for achieving the core values of Social Capitalism than they are today; but these values will only be realised within a socio-political context very different from those traditionally envisaged.
- Social Capitalists repudiate entirely as counter-productive the use of class war as a political weapon: firstly because it is psychologically unacceptable to the tolerant, heterogeneous, individualistic, multi-class, middle-middle majority of today; and secondly and more significantly, there is no longer a distinctive cultural-economic class divide essential for a class war situation, e.g. a proletariat confronting a bourgeoisie, as existed in the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries.
- The 90%+ majority in the advanced industrial economies, irrespective of origins or status, constitute an emerging new class facing the threat of disempowerment and dispossession by the malign forces of Rentier and global capitalism.
- The role of Social Capitalism is to awaken the class consciousness of this emerging majority (denominated the Responsible Society) to its true political situation, and then to lead it under the banner of the cause.
- Political struggle in the future will not be class-based, but will entail an uncompromising struggle against a malign financial-industrial system and targeted individuals.
- This is only made possible by identifying and exploiting the existing dichotomy within the capitalist system: i.e. the conflict of interest between the short-termism of Corporate business with its sole rationale of maximising money profits for investors; and the long-termism of the industrial plant with its will to maximising market share, product (or service) quality, and the stability of the enterprise.
- By promoting the interests of Producers and Home-based industry, Social Capitalism in conjunction with the partnership aims of the trades unions, is able to advance pro-actively the interests of business and industry within the framework of Social Capitalist business values for the prosperity of all.
- Whilst radicalism hitherto has been concerned predominantly with improving wages and conditions, that of the future (i.e. Social Capitalism), in conjunction with the assets of a highly skilled and technological society, will be concerned predominantly with the practicalities of individuals (and not collective entities) taking over the means of production, distribution and exchange for the benefit of the community.
- Social Capitalism calls upon those of goodwill from all sectors of society to promote the cause; and moreover, it appreciates the essential expertise and skills of all (of financiers and bankers no less than engineers and physicists) in contributing towards communal prosperity.
- Social Capitalism displaces entirely the ineffectiveness of not only Marxism but all aspects of socialist theory and those on the left which for many reasons is unable to resolve the problems of our time.
- Whilst the intellectual tools of socialism and Marxism were reliant on the determinism of dialectical-materialism, Social Capitalism lays emphasis on the need to describe those conditions which define contemporary society, and this approach opens up new and immense vistas for vital discussion and research.
Unless those to the left of centre, as well as those on the right, have a sound understanding of the financial-industrial infrastructure and how business operates, it is impossible to formulate intelligent decision-making on all those issues affecting the public sector. This is because public expenditure impinges on the creation and management of capital, and intelligent planning for the former cannot authoritatively be made without the knowledge of the latter. It is for this reason that Social Capitalism places the study of capitalism as central to its role in the resolution of problems.
